My wife and I are U.S. citizens (not of Russian origin) living and working in Russia. How can we get a legal separation document in Russia? We plan to separate now and divorce 6 months to one year later in the United States.

You can dissolve your marriage under the laws of the United States by going to the American embassy in Moscow. You may also accomplish your goal under the laws of the Russian Federation provided that either of you have lived in Russia legally for long time. Under what status you and your wife live in Russia? Do you have adolescent children? Have you and your wife already reached an agreement on the dissolution of the marriage?
